Despite having been used for decades now, ongoing advances in research and many proven medical uses - many parents are still completely unaware of cord blood banking and it's benefits.

According to the Journal of Reproductive Medicine, nearly a third of pregnant women are unaware of cord blood banking altogether, less than 1 in 5 mothers to be have been educated about the process by their doctor or midwife, and a significant percentage don't fully understand the benefits of cord banking.

That's why July has been designated "Cord Blood Awareness Month". Sponsored by the American Hospital Association, the intent of the campaign is to increase awareness about the benefits of cord blood banking and the many medical treatments available using collected stem cells. Much of the campaign appears to be focused on educating practitioners on how to educate their patients.

You can help too! If you've got friends or family who are pregnant, or planning to become pregnant, why not help spread the word yourself? Whether publicly donated or privately banked, there's no reason to throw this precious resource away.
